Today’s Warm-up:
Alphabetical Adjectives
Create a list from A to Z of adjectives that describe qualities you would like to see in a friend or an acquantaince. You may use a dictionary for X
Your list might begin:
- agreeable
- bright
- courteous
After the warm-up we moved to the vocabulary quiz 4 (viv & tort), which I hoped everyone scored well on!
then it was off to a preview of the concept of Diction, or word chioce. You all already know about how to choose your words carefully, but now we’re analyzing how an author might use his or her words to produce different effects. On the board were a series of word-pairs:
- captain tyrant
- intelligent smart
- recreation play
- art craft
- gang club
After we discussed the concepts of denotation and connotation in groups and then with the class as a whole, we worked on the very first page of your blue packet of sample worksheets. this one dealt with Diction, of course.
Finally, we moved on to the third part of “The Bike” and read how Gary got his leg run over with a tricycle and then when riding home he fell got his pant leg caught in the crank because a dog barked at him. He was forced to hobble home with a bike wrapped around his leg. As you know, his mom was pretty angry when she saw him and walked outside with the belt. He probably got it real bad.

Today’s Warm-up:
Mark Twain — Training
Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education.”
–Mark Twain
What education and professional training are you going to get in life to make yourself the very best “cauliflower” you can? If you don’t know about your future, what training has helped you already in your life?
Then we played a couple word games to get your minds working, making them sharp like a razor, to deal with our complicated idea coming up next.
How is Chinua Achebe’s “Civil Peace” more about the Nigerian social situation than about the character Jonathan Iwegbu? How does the author make Jonathan a symbol for normal average people that we can relate to? (hint: look at the way Jonathan works and speaks compared to the theives.)
In one paragraph of 5-10 sentences, answer the question. Support your position with quotes from the story that you or your group members wrote down (you can share ideas!). Your quotes will work like examples that “prove” your position.
If you didn’t finish the paragraph in class, then it is homework. Your only other homework is to study your vocabulary words and, if you have low scores, do the vocab sentences for VIV & TORT.

Today’s Warm-up:
Vivid Verbs
Use the most vivid, exact verbs you can think of in your writing.
- She ____________ into the sleeping baby’s room.
- The soldiers ___________ in line.
- She ________________ breathlessly into the room.
- The dancer ____________ across the stage.
- the huge wrestlers _____________ into the ring.
After the warm-up we tackled the reading quiz for “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan (pgs. 49-55). It was pretty basic information from the story.
Afterwards we discussed some of the points in the story, especially where Jing-mei’s mom finally burst and yelled that she just wanted her daughter to do her best, be her best. We read a little in class together and then it was time for the bell.
One piece of information that I shared was a new list of vocabulary scores on the door that showed whether you have an 85% average in vocabulary or not. If you do then you are highlighted in green and do not have any vocabualry homework. And it stays that way as long as you can keep that 85% average. Good luck.
Finish the story tonight and take reading notes.

Quiz
An open note quiz on the details that we research on the Internet. They are details that appear in “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, which we will be reading next week.
Afterwards, we took the vocabulary quiz on Latin prefixes, list 2.
Finally you worked together as groups on the worksheet ”How Do You Know When You’re an Adult?” Individually and then as a group you decided on your top 5 examples and then finally chose one. You will present your example and your reasons on Monday.

Today’s Warm-up
Today we opened with a group review of CAHSEE literary terms.
We had an interesting time trying to decide the fine distinctions between soliloquy, aside, and monologue. I think most of us got it.
We then finished the analysis of the passages I assigned, attached the work together and turned it in.
In the remaining time we watched a segment from a 2004 film called Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas in English). It is a movie about the spontaneous Christmas truce that broke out all over the Western Front in 1914, much to the commanding officers’ anger and frustration on both sides. It appears that the soldiers had some brains and understood that this trench warfare thing was a disaster. The movie depicts one scene where the French and Scots assault a German entrenchment just a day or two before Christmas. You get an idea for how chaotic, violent, and deadly it was. There’s no sense of order, no opportunity to understand what is happening–everything around you is exploding, flying, dying. It is horrifying. I could only find the clip with Chinese subtitles, but you an basically understand what the characters are saying from their expressions.

Today I spent the first portion of class helping those of you with some very low grades. Then we took a short quiz on Mado 2.1. And finally we watched some of the film. We got along a goodly way.

Well, today we turned in our notecards; reviewed our mythological research with a chart on Much Ado (which you need to hold on to), and handed back lots of papers. Then we turned back to the movie version of the play and got a good laugh out of Signior Benedick’s antics and Lady Beatrice’s facial expressions. How quickly they turn to love! How easily they are swayed!
Lindsey Kiker was astonished to find out that from what we know of the original productions of Shakespeare plays that they spoke MUCH faster than they do today. Today’s style is slow and very enunciated. I think they spoke faster in the past because people really listed very closely, unlike today. Today we have noise noise noise everywhere–PAs, iPods, TV, etc. etc. So we just stop listening. But in the past there wasn’t any of that, so the only thing people could listen to was the human voice–and they were very good at it.
